Here are a bunch of energy tips from BGE - I am working on some simple marker like illustrations
You can save money on your energy bills by following these energy saving practices:
- Keep cool air in and hot air out by sealing openings such as cracks in walls and around windows and doors.
- If you have a fireplace, close the flue damper when it's not in use. The use of a wood burning fireplace can actually draw heat out of the home - unless you have glass doors or an insert.
- If you don't have storm or thermal windows, cover the inside of your windows tightly with plastic from a discount or hardware store.
- Caulk or weatherstrip around doors and windows to seal out cold air. In addition to potential cost savings, a well-sealed home will make the interior space more comfortable.
- Add draft-sealers around electric switches and outlets.
- Use oil, gas, kerosene or wood-burning stoves only when properly vented to the outdoors.
- Remove window air conditioning units to reduce drafts. If this isn't possible, cover all sides of the unit to minimize leakage.
- Don't forget that computers, fax machines,TV's, VCR's, CD players, cable boxes, cassette decks also consume energy because of their standby features. Some will continue to consume energy even when turned off if they are plugged in. Consider unplugging when you leave home or go on vacation.
- Activate the ''sleep'' feature on home office equipment (personal computer, fax, printer and scanner) which automatically minimizes power consumption when not in use.
- If you have a pool, remember that it too consumes energy - consider a pool cover to minimize the operation of the circulation pump.
Here are some other helpful tips for saving energy this summer:
- Have a professional perform routine maintenance on your heat pump or central
air conditioning unit, and have any problems repaired right away. - Change or replace air filters monthly.
- If you have central air conditioning, for every degree you raise your thermostat setting
above 72°F, you will save about 5-7% on cooling costs. - Set the thermostat at 78°F or higher during the summer months.
- Close blinds during the day to block heat, and open them at night to let heat escape.
- Consider using fans, which use much less power, as an alternative to an air conditioner.

Story Telling In Short Excerpts

Leah, I like your writing and I think the contrast between generations that your highlighting is really interesting. The spin that we have a lot to learn from our elder generations is good! I feel like senior citizens would agree and have tons to say about that!
We knew there was an increase in the population of senior citizens. The town of Bowie invited us to their space so we could get a sence of it. When we learned the reason why Bowie had a growing elderly population we saw a beautiful story.
We are college students in Maryland. Our grandparents are apart of a time in America we can only imagine. We look up to our grandparents for sacrificing not for their future but their families. None of us can fathom growing a “Victory Garden” or working in a factory to help a country we live in. None of us can picture sustaining ourselves like that generation did.
We found out that many people from this un- comprehensible era came to Bowie to raise their family. Their kids grew up and went on to do other things. Their grandkids are getting older as well and making their own lives. And although Bowie has changed over the years as well, that special group of people stayed.
Now, everyone is being expected to sustain. The Earth is not in good shape. Neither is our economy. And Bowie is inviting their Senior Citizens to do so as well.
Bowie is giving money to its Senior Citizens to spruce up their houses and make them more energy efficient. This means getting better windows, a new roof, energy efficient supplies, or a new furnace. The homes occupied by senior citizens deserve to be taken care of. Not just by the owners but the community as well. So Bowie can be a little more sustainable.

Newspaper?

Here is a test layout for a newspaper. Yea, I know it’s pretty traditional…but I’m thinking maybe that’s the way would should lean when targeting senior citizens? Rather than a large image of Mt. Vernon, I think we could use a MAN sitting/standing in front of his home. I interned at a newspaper and everyone seemed to tell me that faces grab attention-people want to know who it is and what they did. In this case I think we could aim for a connection/relation to the reader.

On the websites are the logos of the organizations, we should use those as of now were you want to mention the partnering programs. Also, some of the websites are different but if you search the site, you'll get the right one. Be sure you put in the right website though when putting your information on the ad though.
